African fabrics are known for their bright colours and distinctive designs. From hand-made woven fabrics like the Asoke & Kente of WestAfrica, Batiks, Kikoy & Kanga of East Africa, Dutch and industrial prints, these fabrics were and still used to represent stature in society, tradition, culture, celebrations and rites of passage. Sometimes used to pass on folklore stories, The African Fabric,is definitely rich with cultural meaning.

The word “Kitenge” has evolved into describing an African cotton fabric printed in various colours and designs with distinctive borders that is used to create garments, accessories & decor items. Within the past decade, the Kitenge has experienced tremendous popularity and can now be spotted on international fashion runways and worn by celebrities around the world.

Kitenge is no longer a garment/fabric associated with rural Africa. It is now common place to see contemporary garments, accessories like handbags, earrings and even footwear designs, made using this African fabric.

We believe that The Kitenge has come of age. It is time to celebrate this distinctive fabric at THE KITENGE FESTIVAL East Africa!
Make those african printed outfits and see you on 20th October :)
